Changes to the 2021 International Building Code allow for construction of mass timber buildings with larger heights and areas than is currently permitted in Types III, IV, and V construction. This presentation will provide an overview of fire safety provisions including sealants at abutting edges and intersections, fire blocking material, and water supply. New provisions for concealed spaces, membrane structures, and fire districts for existing Type IV Heavy Timber construction will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives
1. Identify new fire safety provisions for new construction Types IV-A, IV-B, and IV-C.
2. Describe new provisions for sealants at abutting edges and intersections and fire blocking material.
3. Recognize new provisions for redundant high-rise sprinkler water supply systems.
4. Evaluate the new provisions for existing Type IV heavy timber construction regarding concealed spaces, membrane structures, and fire districts.
