2018 IBC and 2018 IRC Significant Changes Related to Wood Construction – BCD130

The 2018 International Building Code (IBC) and 2018 International Residential Code (IRC) published by the International Code Council are now available. This presentation will provide an overview of the significant changes to wood design and construction provisions relative to previous editions.

Learning Objectives:
1. Familiar with the significant changes between the 2015 and 2018 IBC wood provisions.
2. Able to locate and analyze content within the 2018 IBC wood provisions.
3. Familiar with new 2018 IRC requirements regarding wood use.
4. Able to explain and use fire protection requirements for wood within the IBC and IRC.

 

Michelle Kam-Biron, PE, SE, SECB, American Wood Council

Michelle Kam-Biron is a California licensed structural engineer and Senior Director of Education for the American Wood Council (AWC) where she is expanding continuing education resources for architects, engineers, and building officials as well as coordinating the development of university level wood design course. Before joining AWC, she worked for nearly five years in the wood industry as the Senior Technical Director – National Lead Mid-rise/Multi-family Construction for the Wood Products Council initiative WoodWorks. Ms. Kam-Biron has authored several articles and white papers related to the use of structural wood. She also has over 20 years of experience managing and designing a wide range of projects of various structural materials as well as Division of State Architect contract plan review. Ms. Kam-Biron graduated from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo with a BS in Architectural Engineering (ARCE) and has served on the ARCE Industry Advisory Council. She is a certified Earthquake Disaster Assessment volunteer and a member of the International Code Council. She also volunteers her time on the National Council of Structural Engineers Association (NCSEA) Basic Education and California Building Officials (CALBO) Structural Safety Committees, is Chair of American Society of Civil Engineers Structural Engineering Institute (ASCE-SEI) Wood Education Committee, a former Director for Structural Engineers Association of California (SEAOC) and Past-President for Structural Engineers Association of Southern California (SEAOSC).

 

Sandra Hyde, PE, International Code Council

Sandra Hyde is a Senior Staff Engineer with the International Code Council. She develops technical resources in support of the structural provisions of the International Building, Existing Building and Residential Codes. Sandra also reviews publications authored by ICC and engineering groups. Prior to ICC, Sandra worked for Weyerhaeuser in research and development of engineered lumber products. She is a Registered Civil Engineer in Idaho and California. Sandra has authored and reviewed code support publications including the Significant Changes to the International Building and Residential Codes, the Special Inspection Manual and, working with APA, the Guide to the IRC Wall Bracing Provisions.

 

James B. Smith, PE, American Wood Council

Jim Smith joined the American Wood Council (AWC) staff in 2014 as the Midwest Regional Manager who is a resource for code officials in the States of ND, SD, MN, IA, WI, IL, MI, IN, OH and KY. He is also a member of the ICC Building Code Action Committee (BCAC).  Prior to joining AWC, Smith was the Chief Building Inspector and Zoning Administrator for the City of Waukesha, Wisconsin.  Before Waukesha he was with the State of Wisconsin’s Safety and Buildings Division as the Program Manager responsible for their Commercial Building Code program. He is a graduate of Madison College.


Equivalencies: 2 Hours of Instruction = 0.2 Continuing Education Units (CEU) = 2 Professional Development Hours (PDH) = 2 Learning Units (LU)
