Code Compliant Wood Frame Applications

MAT101 – Conventional Construction (1 hr), Paul Coats
This course provides a basic overview of building code provisions and industry practices for conventional wood frame
construction. Topics covered include an overview of the International Residential Code wood related provisions as
well as the International Building Code Chapter 23 on wood; and origination and limits of conventional construction
provisions.

STD333 – 2015 WFCM Significant Changes and Introduction to High Wind Guides - 115mph Exp. B (1 hr), Buddy Showalter
Engineering concepts from the 2015 Wood Frame Construction Manual (WFCM), used to develop the 2015 WFCM High
Wind Guides, will be covered, along with updates on changes to the 2015 WFCM. The WFCM and High Wind Guides
provide designers with time-saving tools using prescriptive solutions (based on structural engineering principles) for
wood structures to resist anticipated wind loads. Example problems showing how to apply tabular solutions offered in
the High Wind Guide will also be presented.

MAT210 – Engineered Wood Products (1 hr), Buddy Showalter
We will discuss the family of engineered wood products (EWP) and their applications in wood framed structures.
Applications will be discussed for glued-laminated timber (glulam), cross-laminated timber, structural composite
lumber, wood I-joists, and wood structural panels as well as design stresses and design provisions included in AWC’s
National Design Specification (NDS) for Wood Construction.

DES125 – Design Considerations of Wood Frame Structures for Permanence (1hr), Buddy Showalter
This seminar will review recommendations for control of moisture and protection against decay and insect infestations
contained in AWC’s Design of Wood Frame Structures for Permanence, WCD No. 6.

BCD410-1 – 2015 International Building Code Essentials for Wood Construction (2hr), Paul Coats
Discussion will focus on:
- Maximum building sizes through the use of pre-calculated tables for eight multi-story occupancies
