Design Primer for Mass Timber Construction

This presentation examines how fire-resistance ratings in the 2015 International Building Code (IBC) apply to mass timber and heavy timber construction. Topics include how the IBC incorporates fire testing and calculation methods to quantify fire resistance, and how various materials, including wood, behave when exposed to high temperatures in fires. Discussion will include code-compliant methods for establishing fire-resistance ratings of wood-frame assemblies, and calculation methods for exposed wood members per Chapter 16 of the 2015 National Design Specification® (NDS®) for Wood Construction. Mass timber fire resistance ratings will be discussed based on current and proposed future code provisions. Discussion will also include fire testing and practical considerations for navigating 2015 IBC Chapter 7 on fire and smoke protection features.

Paul is the Southeast Regional Manager for the AWC, which produces code-referenced design standards such as the NDS®. A graduate of Purdue University, Paul has over 25 years of experience with codes, including building inspection, plan review, engineering, and consulting. He routinely assists code officials and designers and participates in national and state-level code development activities. Prior to joining AWC, Paul was on the Code Development Staff of BOCA International, a legacy organization of the ICC.

Introduction to AWC’s 2015 NDS and SDPWS

The American Wood Council’s 2015 National Design Specification® (NDS®) for Wood Construction and 2015 Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS) are ANSI American National Standards referenced in US building codes and used to design wood structures worldwide. This presentation will provide an overview of design provisions included in these documents, including those related to connections, gravity load design and shear walls and diaphragms. Some of the significant changes in the recently approved 2018 NDS will also be reviewed.

Buddy Showalter joined AWC staff in 1992 and currently serves as Vice President of Technology Transfer. His responsibilities at AWC include oversight of publications, website, helpdesk, education, and other technical media. He is also a member of the Editorial Boards for Wood Design Focus, published by the Forest Products Society, and STRUCTURE magazine, published jointly by NCSEA, ASCE/SEI, and CASE. Prior to joining AWC, Showalter was Technical Director of the Truss Plate Institute. He is a graduate of Virginia Tech.
