Wood Solutions Fairs are FREE multi-faceted, day-long educational events on the use of wood in non-residential and multi-family buildings.

Attendees can earn up to 6 AIA/CES LUs (HSW) or PDH credits (one per attended seminar).  AIA/CES forms and professional development certificates will be available on site.

Code Compliant Fire Resistance Design for Wood Construction

Paul Coats, PE, CBO, American Wood Council

Determining the proper code application for fire-resistant wood-frame assemblies and exposed wood structural members can be challenging and is often further complicated with increases in a project’s size and scale. In a building environment where the ability to maximize height and area is key to cost effectiveness, designers must understand the gamut of fire protection considerations applicable wood structures. This presentation will include code requirements, compliance options and nuances related to assembly selection for required fire resistance-rated floor/ceilings and roof/ceilings, interior and exterior walls, fire barriers, fire partitions, and fire walls. Topics will also include distinctions between fire-resistive elements for separation vs. type of construction.

Fire-Resistance Design Primer for Mass Timber Construction

Paul Coats, PE, CBO, American Wood Council

This presentation examines how fire-resistance ratings in the 2015 IBC apply to mass timber and heavy timber construction. Topics include how the IBC incorporates fire testing and calculation methods to quantify fire resistance, and how various materials, including wood, behave when exposed to high temperatures in fires. Discussion will include code-compliant calculation methods for fire-resistance ratings of wood-frame assemblies and wood members exposed to fire per Chapter 16 of the 2015 NDS®. Mass timber fire resistance ratings will be discussed based on current and proposed future code provisions. Discussion will also include fire testing and practical considerations for navigating 2015 IBC Chapter 7 on fire and smoke protection features.

Paul is the Southeast Regional Manager for the AWC, which produces code-referenced design standards such as the NDS®. A graduate of Purdue University, Paul has over 25 years of experience with codes, including building inspection, plan review, engineering, and consulting. He routinely assists code officials and designers and participates in national and state-level code development activities. Prior to joining AWC, Paul was on the Code Development Staff of BOCA International, a legacy organization of the ICC.
